The Purpose

Our purpose is to discover and preserve the trees that the Seneca  Indians bent to mark their trails, water sources, etc.

We live in the Southern Tier of New York State, Allegany County, Almond, New York.  We have photographed more than 100 different trees, many of them in Allegany and Steuben County, NYS.

Long before the white man came to this area in 1796, the Seneca Indians marked their trails by bending saplings and securing  them with vines and sinew.  Today, these huge trees stand as sentinels in the woods – our oldest living historical landmarks.  However, many are dying – or are being cut down – and our goal is to spread public awareness of their importance by  placing signs on the trees indicating their historical value.
